Bio: Johan is an intelligent and sensitive boy, though at times prone
to bouts of teenage angst and melodrama. He was a bright, energetic
and outgoing child, but over the years he has become a detached, withdrawn
individual due to such things as the death of his mother, crises of faith
and the burgeoning issue of his sexuality. At some level, he feels he just
doesn't fit in with anyone, and has become almost misanthropic. The
only person to break him of his now sullen, sometimes caustic nature and
bring out even a glimmer of the outgoing person underneath is his best friend
of three years, Shakti Chatterjee. Johan was born to an immigrant German
family, but prefers not to make an issue of his heritage. As a result
he will typically introduce himself as John to strangers (given that the
anglicized version of his name gives people far less trouble) and though
he speaks German as well as he does English, he only speaks his family's
native tongue when angry or upset. Johan recently moved with his father
to Georgia, and while he is resentful at being forced to leave everything
he's ever known and loved behind his father is optimistic that this fresh
start will be most beneficial to his son. While he has come to terms
with his sexuality, the process has left Johan fairly bitter and strongly

hell when she does talk. Her family moved to America when she was a
child and moved from place to place before settling down in Sharpgsburg.
She met Johan when she transferred to Sharpsburg High School. While
the rest of the student population largely ignored her, the loner Johan saw
in her a kindred spirit and they became fast friends. They've been
best friends and quite inseparable ever since, though this closeness has
led her mother to believe Johan is Shatki's boyfriend (which the two of them
find wildly entertaining). She is a bit of a black sheep of her family,
due to her affinity of the arts and non-science related interests.
Like Johan, Shakti is also gay and is endeavoring to come to terms with her
sexuality amidst traditional and strongly homophobic Indian culture.
